It wasn't about presents, it wasn't that family didn't show.
It was this nonsense of a Tuesday Christmas.
This can't be the only Christmas in the middle of the week I've had but boy did this one stand out.
It was like it wasn't even Christmas. I worked until after five on Christmas Eve. I ended up going in this morning at 8:00 am. That's Christmas?
I'm probably 'spoiled' because I'm a government worker. We had furlough days. That's days without pay. We got 'em in 2009, we had them in 2010 and 2011. Not this year. Furlough days take away your money. So to try to make them go down easier, they put them around days you'll be off like 4th of July and Christmas. So you get two or three days off (only one is paid). And I guess I got used to that.
We didn't have them this year and didn't feel like Christmas.
I would've taken off but, again, everyone put in early. I reminded my boss that she said in 2008 (and every year since), "If you take off this Christmas, don't ask for the next one." Because she wanted to be fair. But she never enforced it and every time, it's the same ones (including me) who get stuck working. Today was so bad that there were only (counting her and me) four employees in our office. She said, "I guess I screwed up." Uh-huh.
But I'm serious, this was the worst Christmas of my adult life. I was stuck working past close because of someone's mistake. (Past close on Christmas Eve.) And I got one lousy day off. I have 227 vacation hours (I also have sick time and what they call 'incentive leave' for not using my sick time). And one of the reasons I have so much is because I can never take off at the times people want to take off (like Christmas) and that's because the same do-nothing-but-watch-the-calendar people wait until 8 am on December 1st, rush their requests to the boss' desk and then, despite saying the same people wouldn't get Christmas off two years in a row, they get it off. Four years in a row, at least. For others much longer.
It didn't feel like Christmas. Some of my family was staying up late last night. I had to go home and go to sleep because I had to go to work in the morning. The same family from out of town came in on Monday. I don't get to see them until after five because I was working.
For me, it wasn't Christmas.
I hope your holiday was better.
