Netflix questions from Walter who is thinking about taking the Netflix leap and signing up for 1 disc at a time (which also gives you unlimited streaming of the small section of films they offer for streamable).
1) Can I really keep them as long as I want?
Yes. I once kept a disc ("Shutter Island") for three weeks and two days. No late fees. No e-mails or phone calls asking, "Where's our disc?" I was not turned over to a collection agency.
2) Why would people sign up for more than 1 disc at a time?
Two things I can think of. First, if you're getting something with more than one discs, it's quicker. Say you want the first season of "Friends" and it's three discs. You'll have to watch one, then mail it back, then wait for the second to arrive. Then watch it, mail it back . . . The other reason is you can angle it so you always have something new if you work it. I'm on the 3 disc a time plan. And I manage to always have one at the house and others in play. So if three come in on Monday, I watch one, send it off Tuesday. Watch another Tuesday, send it off Wednesday. On Wednesday, I watch the third one, send it back. On Thursday? The one I sent back Tuesday has been replaced with a new disc. So if I plan it right, I've always got something new to watch.
3) Do I have to have Wii or can I stream online?
I stream on my laptop. Since I dropped cable, almost everything I watch is on my laptop even the DVDs that come in the mail. So,yes, you can stream online. You'll need DSL or a good wireless connection.
4) I have a problem keeping up with stuff and I'll lose envelopes.
If you mean the slip -- paper -- around the DVD, you can return it without that. (Which I did not know a year ago when it would have been useful.) The envelope itself? If you're doing one, maybe you should see if someone you know is in Netflix. Like if I was your neighbor or co-worker and you told me that, I'd tell you, "I've got them laying all over the house, I'll bring you some." Or I can put your disc in one of my envelopes. (You can return two discs in one envelope.)
I'm going to copy and paste this and e-mail it back to Walter but I really had nothing to write about tonight so I really appreciated Walter's e-mail. I was close to not blogging at all when I saw his e-mail.
If you've got some questions, I'll share what little I do know if you e-mail or leave it in a comment.
Going out with C.I.'s "Iraq snapshot:"
