"Reason" is a libertarian publication. So it's to the right of me. But I had an e-mail about 'check out this video' on this page. And I did. It's the "Today Show" in 1976 and the hosts are Tom Brokaw and Edwin Newman for the segment and the guest is Marshall McLuhan. (Who? He plays himself in "Annie Hall." The guy Woody Allen pulls out in the movie line to prove that loud talker doesn't know what he's talking about.) So there's an academic and this was when the "Today Show" wasn't ten hours long the day it is today. (It's four or five hours today.) So they probably had two hours but they could try to do something like this. They're discussing the Jimmy Carter - Jerry Ford debate and McLuhan's talking about the message and how staged the whole thing was.
Not only would they not do that today but Matt Lauer couldn't keep up with it if they tried. Matt's part of the reason the show's so dumbed down. Never let a Weather Man think he's a journalist.
I always picture Matt's brain trying to think sounding like the first 15 seconds of "Gimmie Some Lovin'." You know the Steve Winwood song? He did it with his group The Spencer Davis Group (that was before Traffic). (Some people wrongly think that's a Motown song and group. It's a White British group.) It's one of the great songs of the sixties in my opinion. And when it starts, it's this squeal of noise at the start.
I think that's the sound Matt Lauer's brain makes. Only the drums never kick in. So it's just that 15 seconds of squeal over and over on a loop.
I'm trying to think of the other Steve Winwood song I really love.
There are a lot of his songs that I like (like "Back In The Highlife Again.").
"Higher Love." I love that song and I love Chaka Khan's backing vocals on that song.
"Bring me to higher love . . . Bring me to higher love . . ."
I always want him to do a song with Tina Turner. I think their voices would make for an amazing blend. And even better if he could write something original for her.
But Tina's probably not thinking about another album. She's probably thinking about just enjoying her life.
Who can blame her? She basically spent entire decades on the road performing.
I'm glad I worked in the petition at the start because I have no idea where I'm going with any of this. I'm just that tired.
Going out with C.I.'s "Iraq snapshot:"
