"The Good Wife" airs on CBS Sunday nights. Last night was a new episode. And probably the best one of the year.
Peter hired the Special Prosecutor to go after Will, remember? And you may not remember that last season, the Special Prosecutor was running against Peter for office. We already saw her offer Will a break if he'd rat out Peter. She revealed that he was her real target.
So we knew she was vindictive but you won't believe how vindictive.
So she and BB (the young Black prosecutor who was supposed to be gone, remember?) and Cary are going before the grand jury. They're going to ask for an indictment of Will.
Alicia asks Peter to call the whole thing off and he won't and he even tells her it's happening because she's sleeping with Will. She tells him that she's not sleeping with Will anymore but Peter doesn't believe her.
Diane testifies first and follows Will's attorney's advice to bring up Peter repeatedly.
The Special Prosecutor is attempting to get an indictment on Will for bribing judges via sports bets that he had forgiven and other things. The judges were part of a basketball game he organized -- regular one -- as was Peter.
So everyone brings up Peter.
Special Prosecutor is insisting BB pressure Kalinda for info. (Remember, BB told Kalinda she either co-operated or they would go after Alicia.)
(It's never explained, but Kalinda didn't fall for that. I think because she knew Peter would not have allowed his wife to be targeted.)
So what's going on is Kalinda's feeding them info. Info she and Will are manipulating to make Special Prosecutor look stupid.
So, for example, Will goes to talk to the judge they're saying he bribes.
And he gets his photo taken by one of Cary's goons. As he's handing an envelope to the judge.
The judge had testified right before and taken the 5th on everything.
Now Will's on the stand and Special Prosecutor asks him if these photos are photos of him handing an envelope to the judge. He says yes.
He says he was giving the judge money.
And Special Prosecutor moves in for the kill and Will explains that it was for a charity to immunize children. She says it's easy for him to say that but -- He stops her and shows her his receipt for the money.
She's flustered. She pulls out e-mails of him e-mailing the judge to talk about different settlements in a case. Will says those are his e-mails but they weren't too the judge, they were to his partner. He's curious where she got them? She tells him she's not on trial and goes on about the e-mails and Will says he's got the originals with him. And he shows them while she freaks out.
BB's furious with Kalinda.
Let's move to the subplot. Eli goes to bed with his political rival (the woman who played Jerry on "Strangers With Candy"). And thinks I don't know what. Maybe that they'll be friendly now. But then he discovers she's going to handle his ex-wife's campaign.
So Will's attorney says that Special Prosecutor is desperate and she will try to hurt, does anyone know where Will is weak?
And we're right.
Alicia is called to the stand.
And quickly Special Prosecutor wants to know about Alicia and Will. Are they sleeping together?
Alicia pauses but answers and answers when they stopped. Cary pulls SP aside and tells her that this is the wrong line of questioning but she tells him to leave if he wants. Then the Special Prosecutor pushes more, Alicia gets up and walks out. The Special Prosecutor tells her she will hold her in contempt and makes all these other threats but Alicia walks out.
She goes home after discovering that the grand jury testimony will be public if there's an indictment. So she wants to tell her kids about the affair.
She's just about to when her cell rings. It's Kalinda explaining Will won.
Why did he win?
We saw one woman on the grand jury ask a squestion about who is Peter? Why wasn't Peter here? Everyone kept mentioning Peter.
And then it turned into that they didn't see what Alicia sleeping with someone mattered to anything. They -- like the audience -- hated SP.
SP goes to Peter. He is calm and blank. He thanks her for her work. She thinks his being blank means he doesn't know what happened in court and she tells him she can still get Will and he cuts her off and calls her out for putting Alicia on the stand and asking about the affair. She wants to argue. He tells her she can leave his office. She says she'll file charges with the bar against Will. He tells her she needs to do what she wants but she's done and she needs to leave.
Alicia, having found out from Kalinda that the testimony now will not be public, tells the kids she wants them to take a week off for a vacation.
It was a really good show.
